The Communities

The Northwest Territories is home to 33 communities with varying lifestyles, living experiences and culture. The communities in the Northwest Territories range in size from the capital city of Yellowknife with a population of 19,155 to the community of Jean Marie River with 71 people. Other principal centres in the Northwest Territories include Inuvik, Norman Wells, Fort Simpson, Hay River and Fort Smith.

  • Each community has its own school, enabling children to attend classes in their home communities.
  • Retail shopping. The remoteness of some communities increases the cost of goods and services.
  • Many communities are small compared to the vast land that surrounds them, which lends to a community that is self reliant and lives off the land.
