    Family Practitioner


    Family Practice Physicians are currently based out of the larger communities of Yellowknife, Inuvik, Hay River, Fort Smith and Fort Simpson. In other small communities, a primary care physician makes regularly scheduled visits.

    In Yellowknife, family practice physicians provide more specialized services and are affiliated closely with Stanton Territorial Hospital. At Stanton, physicians may provide services in the operating room as a General Practitioner anaesthetist, provide a full range of obstetrics, or work full time in the emergency department.

    Physician Specialist


    Physician Specialists practice in Yellowknife based out of the Stanton Territorial Health Authority. The Northwest Territories employs Specialists in the following areas:

    • Obstetrics and gynecology
    • Orthopedic surgery

    • Ophthalmology
    • Pediatrics
    • Internal medicine
    • Psychiatry
    • Anesthesia
    • Radiology

    Locum Opportunities

    Locum opportunities exist for General Practitioner’s to experience the life of a physician in a rural northern community. The Government of the Northwest Territories along with its eight Health and Social Service Authorities are pleased to accommodate Canadian Physicians looking to perform locums across the Northwest Territories. Each Health and Social Services Authority finalizes arrangements regarding timeframes, licensing and logistical matters.
